Itchy Gums – What Your Mouth is Telling You

Got an itchy feeling coming from your gums?  Does it feel really good to keep flossing certain areas?  Itchy gums are a common symptom of Gingivitis – an inflammation of gum tissue that if not treated early can progress and lead to gum recession.

What Causes Itchy Gums?

General Dentists at Centennial Smiles Dental in downtown Calgary want patients to understand that itchy and inflamed gums are indicative of a buildup of bacteria on and below the gum line.  Poor oral hygiene is the number one cause of gingivitis and apart from itchy gums patients can also experience gums that are red and swollen, areas of gum recession, bad breath and a persistent bad taste in the mouth.  Some patients may attest to experiencing all symptoms, while others may only notice one or two signs of gingivitis.  Regardless of the symptoms, oral tissues are responding to an unhealthy buildup of bacteria (found in plaque deposits), and though poor oral hygiene is the number one cause of gingivitis other factors can also contribute such as:

  • Smoking
  • Certain Medications
  • Illness
  • Diet
  • Pregnancy and Hormonal Fluctuations
  • Substance Abuse
  • Diabetes
  • Stress

Combating Gingivitis

Untreated Gingivitis usually progresses to become Periodontal Disease – a more destructive disease that involves not only gum tissue but supporting bone and ligaments.  In order to keep your teeth for a lifetime, you have to have an adequate level of bone for support.  As bone levels are destroyed by disease a tooth becomes mobile – and is at high risk for premature loss.  Getting treatment for Gingivitis is less invasive than having to treat Periodontal Disease – and when treated early Gingivitis can be stopped in its tracks.

Regular Dental Cleanings

Just like your mechanic can’t say enough good things about the value of an oil change – the same goes for maintaining regular dental cleanings.  During a cleaning a hygienist uses special tools to remove deposits of plaque (bacteria) both above and below the gumline – ensuring that roots are also free from harmful bacteria.  Once plaque deposits have been removed the source of gum irritation is also removed – helping gums become less inflamed and less prone to bleeding easily.

Family Dentists at Centennial Smiles Dental encourage patients to talk to their dentist about itchy and inflamed gums – and treating this condition can improve your health and save your smile.
