What is Invisalign?

By now, you’re likely aware of options other than traditional metal wire braces when it comes to orthodontic treatment. However, some of these treatment — like Invisalign, are still relatively new, and your average Canadian may not understand them well. We’re here today to shed some light on what exactly Invisalign is.

How it Works

Invisalign is a product that is able to straighten your teeth without the use of any wires or brackets. Essentially, it's a set of custom plastic retainers that you wear overtop of your teeth. The retainers will slowly and gradually shift your teeth until the final position is achieved. The retainers themselves are clear and basically invisible. Because they’re custom designed to your teeth, patients don’t experience the same discomfort that is often associated with metal braces. You can also say goodbye to the painful, dreaded monthly appointments of tightening your wires. With Invisalign, the only adjustment that occurs is a switch of retainers every few weeks.

What Can it Treat?

Invisalign is highly effective in treating many of the same cases that regular braces are meant for. Crooked or protruding teeth are the most common targets, and they’re easily corrected. Invisalign is also a valid option for more moderate cases of crooked teeth, and it can be used to correct an overbite or underbite. Invisalign can fix tightly crowded teeth and close wide gaps between teeth. Even treating a crossbite or open bite (which might have required headgear in the past) is made easier by Invisalign.

Why not Just Use Braces?

Invisalign has successfully treated many cases that can also be treated with traditional braces. What, then, makes Invisalign better? The main benefit is patient comfort. Ask anyone who's had braces and they’ll launch right into sob stories of a mouth full of wires, aching teeth, and bleeding gums and lips. Invisalign provides the same kind of treatment with much less discomfort and hassle. Perhaps best of all, the retainers are able to be removed, allowing you to enjoy simple acts such as eating and drinking in a way that regular braces don’t allow. If you play sports, Invisalign eliminates the risk of cutting your gums or inner cheek on a wire during movement. Maintaining oral hygiene is also made easier, as you just remove the retainers and brush and floss your teeth like normal.

Despite being simple plastic, Invisalign is an extremely powerful orthodontic tool that can correct many misplaced teeth scenarios. Contacting your dentist is the best way of making sure that Invisalign is right for you. Centennial Smiles is more than happy to help answer any questions you may have.
