How common is dental anxiety?

Nervous about the dentist, but need treatment? You’re not alone. According to The Journal of the Canadian Dental Association about 22 percent of patients experience extreme fear or anxiety of seeing the dentist. 

The idea of having someone explore a personal area such as your mouth, gums and teeth can be unpleasant and cause distress. 

For some people, the nervousness extends to an aggressive form of dental dental anxiety that makes them avoid the dentist at all costs even to a degree that when something doesn’t feel quite right they neglect problems until they become severe. 

At Centennial Smiles we don’t want you to wait until you have a severe dental problem. A small issue can turn into something that requires more invasive dental procedures like a root canal or a tooth extraction. Before it gets to this, please know we offer sedation for dentistry. 

At our office we provide both oral sedation and IV sedation so you can receive necessary dental care. We are experienced with patients that suffer from fear and anxiety and will only proceed with treatment once you are totally comfortable.

Not only does sedation keep you comfortable during treatment it also allows us to reduce your total number of visits by finishing all treatment in a single appointment whenever we can. 

Oral Conscious Sedation

These sedatives won’t put you to sleep but they will make you drowsy and only slightly aware. You will receive anesthetic for your comfort and only have vague memories of your time in the dental chair.

IV Sedation

This type of sedation is used for a deeper state of anesthesia and isn’t for those who fear needles.

IV sedation is administered fast and makes you less aware of your surroundings. You may still be able to respond to your dentist and follow basic instructions.
