What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a fixed, long-term solution for missing teeth. Itβs designed to look, feel, and function like natural teeth, which is why patients love it.
Getting an implant is a surgical procedure. Your dentist or oral surgeon places the titanium screw or implant and allows it to fuse with the jawbone.
The implant serves as an artificial tooth root, which becomes the foundation of the replacement tooth.
Since the implant is fixed on the bone, the replacement tooth is also secure in place. It stands on its own and doesnβt impact surrounding natural teeth.
Why a dental implant may be necessary
Dental implants are the gold standard in replacing missing teeth. You may consider getting implants if you:
β Have one or several missing teeth
β Have good oral hygiene habits
β Have a fully-developed jawbone
β Have healthy teeth and gums
β Have enough jawbone to support the implant
β Have no health condition that may interfere with the procedure
β Have no habits, such as smoking, that may affect the success of the procedure β Arenβt comfortable with dentures
To know if this teeth replacement option is suitable for your goals and needs, schedule a consultation with your dentist in the downtown Calgary area.
What to expect from a dental implant procedure
1. Before
Dental implants require multiple dental visits. The first step is a thorough evaluation with your dentist.
You may need to have your dental x-rays taken. Your dentist also talks to you about any medical conditions you may have, along with medications youβre taking.
Together, you map out an individualized treatment plan that addresses your concerns and goals.
The sedation or general anesthesia during the procedure may cause numbness so you need to take it easy for the rest of the day. Be sure to plan your transportation too.
2. During
If thereβs still a remaining tooth in the treatment area, your dentist extracts it first and lets the site heal.
If extraction isnβt required and thereβs enough jawbone in the area, your dentist proceeds to place the titanium post onto the jawbone. They also place a cap over the implant and then leave it to heal for up to six months.
During this period, you need to see your dentist ensure that the healing is going well.
After the site has healed, your dentist now attaches an abutment to the implant. The gum is then allowed to heal, and after that, the replacement tooth or a crown is connected to it.
3. After
The treatment duration can vary widely as much of the process goes to waiting for the gums to heal.
Once the procedure is complete, your dentist provides you with prescriptions to help relieve any discomfort or pain. While the site heals, itβs best to eat soft food.
Are dental implants safe?
Dental implants are safe and are a common procedure. However, as with any dental treatment, there are risks and complications involved. You and your dental team plan your treatment carefully to ensure youβre fit and ready for it.
