What to Expect at Your First Appointment
Life is full of firsts. First steps, first words, and first dental appointments! Having healthy teeth that’ll last a lifetime means starting with proper oral hygiene right from the beginning. When’s the best time for your child to come in for their first ever dental appointment, and what can you do to prepare?
How to Prepare
Most children are ready for the dentist within 6 months of when their first tooth sprouts or when they have their first birthday, whichever comes first. This timing is perfect for many reasons. First, it gives the dentist an opportunity to identify any small issues that may be present, things which can then be quickly acted upon. Second, it’s a chance for you ask any questions you may have and go over proper oral care for your child. Lastly, we want to make sure that your child’s first visit is a positive experience. Getting them acclimated to the idea of a dental visit early on is crucial to ensuring lifelong healthy habits.
At the Appointment
Enjoy and make the most of your time at our office. We’re here for you and your child and you should feel free to bring up any questions or concerns you may have. There’s a good chance that no formal work or tests will be done at this initial meeting, but your dentist may order some x-rays, check for signs of decay, and ensure that your child’s baby teeth are growing in as they should. More importantly, they’ll go over what proper cleaning techniques you should be using, and may talk to you about using toothpastes with a proper fluoride concentration.
After the Appointment
Once you arrive back home, aim to incorporate any advice or suggestions given to you into your child’s routine. Over the next several months, monitor their growth and progress. Look for any abnormal behaviours in sucking and chewing, and note any changes in their mouth. Baby teeth are notorious for growing in at awkward angles, meaning braces or other orthodontic treatment could be necessary down the road. The best way to check for this is to schedule and come in for regular checkups.
